As part of its ongoing effort to research maritime and U.S. port-related transportation improvements, CCDoTT convened a transportation workshop on September 18, 2009, on the campus of the California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). “Delivering the Goods” brought together 60 experts on Southern California goods movement to create a platform for a comprehensive approach to solving the issues of goods movement in the Los Angeles Basin.

Opening the proceedings, CSULB President F. King Alexander challenged the participants to re-think the problem of goods movement, particularly cargo from the two local ports, in the Los Angeles basin. At the luncheon keynote address Dr. Mary D. Nichols, Chair of the California Air Resources Board, highlighted recent moves by the State to improve the air.

The participants divided into groups based on their primary interests: Environment, Technology, and Economy. Through structured dialogue they created a set of statements about international freight and goods movement in Southern California. These experts almost unanimously agreed that “Delivering the Goods” generated all the important issues in a candid, professional discussion and were generally very supportive of the collective findings. Through this workshop the stage has been successfully set for a next step.

The workshop invitation, program, handouts, presentation and summary report can be found in the links below.

Our sincere appreciation goes out to the conference facilitators Dr. Philip Borden of Essergy Consulting Inc., Mr. Ken Pilone of Lean Consulting Associates LLC, Mr. Mat Kaplan of the CSULB College of Continuing and Professional Education, and our friends at The Barton Group who helped to make this event happen.
